Fast-Charging Anxiety Moves to the Charging Side as Cell Makers Build Their Own Networks

Oct 16th,2026 47 Views
For years, the fast-charging story was mostly about the cell: higher C-rate, thinner separators, better electrolyte, CTP/CTB structure, 800V or 1000V platforms. In 2026, the focus is clearly shifting from the cell to the charging network.

Why Charging Infrastructure Became the New Battlefield

More chargers do not automatically mean better charging. Public data shows that the total number of charging points has already surpassed gas stations in many major EV markets, yet drivers still face uneven power distribution, queues at busy service areas, and many low-utilization sites.
At the same time, 5C and above vehicles are moving from premium models into mainstream price segments. Industry estimates put 800V platform penetration around 15% across leading EV markets by 2026. If the cells can charge fast but the stalls cannot, "5-minute charging" stays on the spec sheet only.

Why Battery Makers Enter the Charging Business

Traditional charge-point operators are good at site acquisition, construction, O&M, and membership apps. But they usually do not control cell-level data: C-rate limits, cycle life, thermal management, and BMS strategy.
The bigger issue is cost location. In a megawatt charging site, grid connection, transformer upgrade, and high-voltage cabling often take 35%–50% of total investment. Operators earn from service fees, so they rationally stop at 400–600 kW. Battery makers want the "5-minute experience" closed end-to-end, so they are more willing to add storage, build photovoltaic-plus-storage charging hubs, and run the network themselves.

Sunwoda: 10,000 Megawatt Stations by End of 2027

Sunwoda EVB launched its "Open Infinity" flash-charging ecosystem in September 2026, targeting 10,000 megawatt-class charging stations by the end of 2027. The platform is open to multiple vehicle brands rather than limited to Sunwoda-supplied models.

BYD: 2,000 Highway Stations Already Built

BYD's second-generation Blade Battery supports roughly 10%–70% in 5 minutes and 10%–97% in 9 minutes. By September 2026, BYD had completed 2,000 highway flash-charging stations covering 278 expressways.

Charging Network Is the Cell Maker's Data Extension

For a battery manufacturer, a charging site is not just a sales channel. It becomes:
  • a place to collect temperature, internal resistance, lithium-plating risk, SOC/SOH data
  • a field test for high-C-rate cells under real load
  • a storage buffer for peak shaving, demand control, V2G
  • a step from "selling cells" to "selling energy service"

What This Means for Storage Buyers

EV ultra-fast charging and stationary storage are different markets. Megawatt charging will drive demand for high-rate cells, liquid-cooled terminals, buffer storage, and grid upgrades. But for procurement teams, the real checks are still batch consistency, test records, shipping compliance, and fit-for-application.
